Craving Beauty

Don't we all crave beauty, somewhere deep inside?
What are we longing for?

"What is really beautiful must always be true."
~ Stendhal

“We do not want merely to see beauty... we want something else which can hardly be put into words- to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it. That is why we have peopled air and earth and water with gods and goddesses, and nymphs and elves.”
~ C. S. Lewis

””  “”One thing I have asked from the LORD,
that I shall seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the LORD
And to meditate in His temple."
Psalms 27:4

  1. I'm glad someone "captured" one of the beautiful sunsets we've been having. Allow me to add to your quotes about beauty: "Why Do We Hunger For Beauty", by James Croegaert; and "The Lesson of the Moth" by Don Marquis ("eat the meat and spit the bones" for the latter). Thanks for turning my thoughts toward God - Your cousin Kenneth

    1. Thank you, Kenneth. I will have to look at those! I don't think we will truly EXPERIENCE beauty until we see God and are with Him. We get a glimpse of it here on earth, but we can't really completely absorb it and feel it like C.S. Lewis was talking about. One day..... !!!!

    2. Ok, I did some internet searching and am thinking "Why do We Hunger for Beauty" must be a song? I wasn't able to find the lyrics though. :( "The Lesson of the Moth" popped right up. I really enjoyed it. It is quite thought provoking. Quite. It seems like Marquis is proposing an "either/or" situation when I believe it is a "both/and" type of thing. As a Christian we get to enjoy the passion of life and continue living. I think of the Westminster Catechism that John Piper quotes so often, "Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever."
I just took a shower and thought some more... I could totally spiritualize the moth and say him taking the risk and diving into the cigar lighter is like a person finally giving in to "The Hound of Heaven" and throwing themselves into God who is a consuming fire. You get the passion of TRUE LIFE when the old man dies.
Anyway, Kenneth, I have you to thank for not being so sleepy anymore. So thank you, my cousin. :)
